Private Pilot Oral Exam Test Prep Book

I finally received my Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide I ordered on ebay.com today and I have to admit that it is a lot thicker than I thought. My objective is to carry this around with me and look over it every time I have down time. I consider it to be my bible till May (Checkride). I have started to look over it and I am happy to be able to answer most questions in there. I also see alot of questions I do not remember or have not learned. It is well worth the $8+shipping costs I spent on it and recommend any Student Pilot no matter what level to purchase this and look over it from time to time.

Private Pilot Time

I realized that my PPL checkride is fast approaching even though to you it may seem far away (May 11) and it makes me so happy to think I will be able to fly places with friends and family. For about a year now I have had my first destination as a Private Pilot set. I am an avid Flight Simulator guy and have met alot of friends via flight Sim (FSX). One including is the CEO of the well known Global Air Virtual Airlines. He is my age and we have been friends for a while. I decided when I get my license I will fly up to Cleveland and we will hang out. Cleveland is an awesome city, and for some reason it is one of my favorite places to be. Burke Lakefront Airport is in Cleveland and that is were I would fly to most likely.

The second most desired place to go is to EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, my friend from Dayton is receiving his PPL soon and wants to go up there as well. We figured if we want to go, why not go together. So there could be a chance if we find our skills proficient enough that we make the fun trip up there. Of course the downfall is the busyness of following all the ATC's procedures but hey it would be and experience.

I just cant waite for that day to take my checkride. I get excited just thinking about it. But we will just have to see, for now I'm just learning and having fun.

Weekly Discussion Topic

Alright so to spice up my blog I figured I would start adding discussion topics to see what all you guys think. So make sure to check in with me every week to write what you think about the topic. The way you can write your opinion is through commenting on the post. I will usually add my opinion at the end of the week.

This weeks topic: Which aircraft is the better kind to fly and train in, A High wing aircraft or a Low wing aircraft?

KOWX..... Fun Times

As I progress in my training I find that the more experience you get the more freedom and fun opportunities you receive. As a student pilot in your first 10 hours or so its mostly maneuvers, pattern, maneuvers, pattern. As I grow near 30+ hours the freedom of being able to stray away from the usual and enjoy flight more for what it truly is seems great. We flew to a couple airports today including KOWX which is Ottawa Airport. I really wanted to do this for a while for I love Ottawa basically grew up there in a sense and wanted to see their airport not just from the fence. Overall it was a cool airport pretty dead but good runway. Then my instructor proceeded in taking me to Pandora for some grass strip work. It was real fun and tought, hands on soft field training. Even though it wasn't real soft. As we rolled to a stop to get our plane refueled a saw the Learjet taxi in from landing and people get off with enlightened smiles on their faces. It reminded me exactly why I fly and cant wait to be in the cockpit of one of those someday.

No one to the right

Solo flight is what I flew yesterday, It was fun for I havent been up by myself in a while. I flew the pattern the whole time for I was trying to not be high like I always am. Although being high is better than low I still wanted to hit the altitudes dead on. First landind was a good one perfect pattern into a nice landing. The second one however was a bit different. As I came in my approach was spotless. Im over the runway and start to flare. For one reason or another I was a little higher than I should of which in result made a hard landing. I have never really experienced a truly hard landing until that. So just to be safe I came back and had my instructor take a gander at the plane make sure it was okay. He said it was probably just harder than I usually do and it actually wasn't as bad as I think. All in all it was a fun day and cant wate to do it again.

11 hours to go!

Well I had a flight lesson yesterday and it was fun. We practiced soft and short field landings and takeoffs for the most part of the lesson. I was doing very well and performed the maneuvers the best I have ever done. Also I had my friend come flying not only to enjoy the magic of flight but to take video for the movie I am making for my Audio&Video Production class. We were at the airport for about 2 hours just filming anything and everything a student pilot does during a lesson. It was fun and hope to have the movie all edited in about 2 weeks. Ill make sure to put it up here. As the title says I have 11 more hours till I legally have enough hours to get my PPL. Although I wont be 17 and Ill probably need more hours since most do. All in all I am enjoying getting hours and cant wait till May to have my license, until then its a matter of cross country's and solos. The latest thought I have had was about ATP flight school. I was wondering what you all think about it. Have you gone there for training? Do you like it? Was it worth it?
Thanks and Until Next Time,
Ian

Rust is not fun

Ahhh well I feel great to be back on blogger and write about my flying adventures again. A short golf season, yet feeling long pulled me away from my love, Flying.Im back into the swing of things and ready to fly again. Today I had my first lesson in about 3 months, ya I know what your thinking. Well, the rust was not as thick as a presumed it would be. We decided to go up and do basic maneuvers such as S-turns , turns around a point and various climbs and turns. For how simple they sound they can be a bit challenging. Making a circle in the sky is harder then it looks. All in all I was so happy to write one more hour in the book. It didn't seem like it had been that long for when I hopped in the left seat and started it up it felt like I was home again.

Dayton Airshow Recap

P-51 Mustang

Well I went to the Airshow and I have to admit it was so awesome. I have alot of pictures and videos as you can see, so Ill keep adding them as we speak but Blogger.com takes forever to add media. So anyway they had anything from Cessna's to B52's and C5 Galaxy. Every single plane was so unique it was crazy. My favorite plane was the P51 Mustang, Ive always loved that plane and was excited when I got to see it fly LIVE. Also the Warthog was cool. Lets see there were a lot of helicopters and I love the sight of those, they were awesome. Maybe I am making a mountain out of a mole hill but this was my first airshow and by god it was great.
There was a Brazilian team called the "Esquadrilha da Fumaca" which was the Brazilian air force flight team. They flew T-27 Tucano's. Those airplanes are really cool. They did alot of crazy and sweet stuff. I would have to say they are almost as cool as the Thunderbirds!!! Alright so finally at the end of the day after I met of with my virtual ATC buds we watched the USAF Thunderbirds. They were fantastic I couldn't see myself ever being able to handle those G's they pull. Some of those maneuvers were just undescribable.
So to wrap things up, the airshow was well worth $16 to enter and a $3.00 Pepsi!!!!!! I have to admit going through all those big cargo planes had me thinking how I would do in the USAF. I'm going to keep that option open the next couple years just to keep my mind open to anything. My photography isn't the best but I tried.
Until Next Time,

PATTERN O PATTERN

Well today I did another solo for about .9 for the heck of it. Umm I did 4 landings did pattern the whole time except when I flew over my friends house and circled it to see if he would call me about it later. All my patterns were pretty good 3 out of 4 landings were good the fourth I ballooned a little. O well Ill get it next time. Lets see I had to do a go around cause I saw on final a construction truck was past the hold short line so I mean not going to take a chance even though it would of been fine. Thats about it.

First Official XC

Well today I did my first "official cross country flight". Here is how it went down took off out of KFDY at around 11am ish. then flew down to KOSU. We got put on 27R which is a smaller runway than I was used to. It was 2994ft long. We did about 4 landings there and then went to I74. Which has a great little airport cafe. We ate some cheeseburgers there as we watched some airplanes land and take off. Food was good and well priced and I recommend it to anyone looking to fly some were. After that we did one pattern then took off their grass strip to Findlay. A little while later and a little IFR work we land and my 3 hour XC was finished. Fun time and learned alot.

Time To SOLO again!!!

Well it was that time to solo again and Ill tell you what I was as nervous as a seal. To be honest I was less nervous on my first solo. Well I hopped in the plane and started it up. The funny thing is I saw the guy working on his baron in the hanger to the right of NWO's and he just laughed when my instructor didn't get in the Co-pilot seat. Taxied over to 25 and low and behold my friend with a C150 was in front of him. Just two days earlier I was helping him put his C150 together after his annual. He taxied on and off I figured he was just seeing how his mag was that he worked on. Then it was my time I did the Run-Up and taxied into position and took off. It looked to be not as busy as I thought it would be but that would change. I when straight out and did some low level maneuvers about 12 nm east of the field.
Well I finally got them done and now it was time to enter the pattern for landing. Well I was listening early to make sure I knew were everyone was and get a visual in my mind of the layout. I had a helicopter some were but his mic was fuzzy. Had a Cirrus jerk in the pattern for full stop and I had a foreign guy also entering upwind for 36 which was active for the winds had changed. So any way I get about 10 nm south of the field looking to enter a upwind so I could do a full pattern. And the foreign guy announced his position as if he were a student and seemed new. Well this jerk guy in a cirrus or what have you repeated what he said slowly making fun of the foreign guy in the pattern. I thought how immature you have to be to make fun of a new pilot. But anyway I entered a upwind for 36 was going good till final. I was to high so I went around for good measures sake and did it again. Finally I got it did an okay landing and taxied it back to fuel.
Overall, I thought it was a good day. But to those pilots out there note** When you have a new guy or a foreign guy that may not speak very good English be patient, look out for him, and help him out. He's just trying to have fun like you are.
Until Next Time,

Long Time

Well its been a while since I have posted anything. But just recently Friday I had a flight lesson. The lesson was over unusual attitudes and soft and short takeoffs/landings. Unusual Attitudes was a breeze nothing to it. Short and Soft landings were a little work still need a good amount of training on them but i have time. After we landed we went over X-country planning and we planned my "first" official cross country trip. I got to choose and we are going to KOSU form KFDY then from KOSU to I74 for lunch then back home. Should be a fun one. Well next lesson is going to be a solo practicing low level manuvers. I cant wate it will be very fun. Then after that it will be the cross country trip so were looking at about 3 weeks till that trip.

Lately I have had fun getting my virtual ratings for vzid ARTCC which is and ARTCC for VATSIM that handles the Indionapolis sector for Air Traffic Controlling. I am currently a Tower and below rated controller. I have to admit it is very fun and has opened other windows for job oppurtunities in the future. They train you to the utmost criteria and it is not easy. But its worth it. I have been looking at colleges cause I have been bored and almost set on Kent St. lately for they have an FAA certified ATC program there now Ive heard many horror stories about ATC colleges and how its a waste but I think it would be a cool thing to do. Of course my dream is still to be a pilot but lets face it not everything goes as planned so its good to have a back up.
Please comment,email with feedback.

Logbook Description: pattern, FIRST SOLO !!!

Well today was a fun filled day. First of all my Birthday was today, I turned 16. All day at school all I could think about was the flight I was going to have after track practice. After practice I went home took a shower and went on my way to the airport to what I was hoping would be my solo day. Well I got a call from my instructor on the way there about how the wind had become out of my solo limits. Sadly, that means no solo time in the logbook for me then. Then we got there and he had me take a pre-solo knowledge test. I did ok not as good as I thought I would but hey you cant win them all. After we did that real quick my family and Ryan my instructor went across the street for dinner. O how good was the cheeseburger. I ate it down like I had not ate in 5 days. I, being me called the ASOS about 50 times to check on the wind. Finally, it was getting better so Ryan and I left right when we were done and preflighted and got the plane ready. So time for start up, we taxi to 36 and take off. No planes in the pattern it looked like so I flew 2 patterns with him, him not helping or talking for any of it. Then we taxi off the runway he unbuckles his seat belt and says good luck. I was first in shock when he closed the door. Like "Wow I'm really doing this." Then I get up and look for traffic and takeoff and Ill tell you what my pattern was as good as I could get. A little high but it was fine, and heard a VOR approach for 25 the intersection runway so I stayed in contact with him the whole time making sure we wouldn't hit each other.
He went missed so I didn't have to do a 360 on base, final. And I ended up making the best landing of my flying career. Then I taxied back and did it all over again. Only this time I was way high all the way through. I finally get on final and way high so i ease everything off. Still high, what to do hmmmm.... Go around well finally I get withing about 500ft of my abort point and land it. I was a little hot coming in about 68kts but I made it didn't I. Taxied back to hanger got pictures, shirt cut, and all the other things that come with a birthday. Well late now so I'm going to go and write later. PICTURES WILL BE ON SOON AS WELL AS A VIDEO!!!!!
COMMENT PLEASE,
Until Next Time,

Last Post Till I Fly by Myself

T shirts cut off when you solo.

Well its been a short journey so far through my flight training. I think its gone awfully fast and cant wait for more adventures to come. But the task at hand is how I am almost ready to solo. Now I turn 16 May 11 that would mean Monday is my Birthday.... O YAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! I get my medical tomorrow, so we will have that out of the way. And now all Ill have to do is focus on my SOLO flight. Lets reflect on my flight training so far. Hmmm well the first event that was a big deal was my first flight it was great fun and brought me to were I am now. The next major thing was stalls now I know its not a big deal but they were for me at first. But now I'm comfortable with them for the most part. Then the next big thing was my trip last weekend probably the most fun I have had in a while. Fun= Flying All Day. So yes with just a little over 20 hours I believe I can take N6186T up for a whirl around the pattern by myself. Now all I have to worry about is that dang old weather to shape up cause right now its calling for rain. Well that's it please comment and give any advice you may have I would greatly appreciate it.

Sportys Day

Well this 3 day weekend was a great one. I got to get out of school Friday for my instructor was going down to Sportys to get one of there Cessna 172's worked on for it was left in a hail storm before they bought it. Stupid? But anyway we took off around 7:30-8am ish and landed o about and hour, hour and a half later. The trip down there was beautiful we had an IFR clearance cause there were a few clouds. Ryan decided to shoot the GPS approach to runway 22 at I69 but we ended up getting vectors till we had the visual then cancelled our IFR Flight Plan. Then when we got there we taxied to the work hanger and met a nice guy that drove us over to the Sporty's Building. I thought it was pretty cool since I have always wanted to go to Sportys and now I was actually there. We went inside and hung out for a while waiting for a courtesy car. I called up a friend that lives in Cincy and we met him at KLUK and ate lunch. When we went to KLUK it was beautiful. The perfect mix between turbine and prop planes. So anyways after we ate we went back to Sportys and Dave (Friend) asked if we wanted to pull out his friends Piper J3 Cub and I was nervous but went for it. He got in and real quick got current then had me get in the back and we went for an hour flight around Cincy. I really had a tough time flying it at first and then got used to the fact its a taildragger 1946. Then we went back to I69 and Ryan got in and they did 3 patterns to the grass strip to the right of 22. Then I got back in and we did a quick hop to KLUK to get gas. The ATC was cool it was the first time I really talked to ATC so it was an experience. Then we got down fueled up and taxied back and went back to Sportys. Perfect timeing for the Cessna 172 was done when we got the Cub back in its hanger. So we said our goodbyes and packed all up into the Cessna. We got the IFR Plan back to Findlay. It was bad weather on the way home we had rain and in the clouds for 90% of the time I thought. But we made it back safely we landed and put it in the hanger. I'm glad I got this chance and plane to go to KLUK alot in the summer for its a wonderful airport I thought. Well I get my medical on Wednesday and solo on May 11 hopefully with about 20 hours in my logbook. Pics of my trip coming soon.

Friday Frenzy

So I just got back from a lesson we ended not going up in the air for the weather wasn't up to par. But we did fly in the sim and I was taught how to do basic ILS approaches which was fun. I knew most of the stuff but the thing was I had never done one manually all the way like I did. I would always A/P it on my Flight Simulator. Lazy I Know. But anyway my instructor is going down to Sporty's Flight School Airport to get one of the Flight Schools Fleet worked on and asked e to come along. So I am going with him Friday and get to miss school. It will be fun I have never gone on a longer trip than just around my area in a Cessna so it will be an adventure. We are leaving at 7:30ish and be back some other time.

Airspace Seminar

Well the seminar yesterday was a fun experience. I got almost all the questions I was asked correct. I was probably the best day this year weather wise and airport wise. There were alot of airplanes out and flying. There were some J3's, Cessna's, Pipers, and a Mooney. After the seminar I went and walked around looking at all the planes i got to sit in the Mooney and I love the feel of it. Man Mr. Mooney was a smart plane builder. That plane is so aerodynamic. So anyway after that I got to hop in the C172Sp I train in while my instructor was teaching another student. It was fun a bit bumpy but I'm not complaining.... I was in the air. So we were up there an hour and a half doing some soft and short takeoffs and landings. Overall it was probably one of the more fun days this year. Some might find it boring but being at the airport is were I belong I guess.
Thanks Till Later,
Ian

Pattern Time

Well Monday I had another lesson which we stuck to the pattern. It was a rainy day on Monday when I flew. I got there and pre flighted with no one there and then my instructor got there and we were basically ready to go. By now I was pumped up cause its been so long since I've been in the air. When we finally took off it was like I was home again. So for the hour of my lesson we did 5 patterns and some were very nice and some of course can't be perfect. Eventually I got better and better. I like my approaches I think they are decently good but my landings could get softer there still a bit hard. O well I guess that's why you take lessons. Now I have 13.2 hours and am so pumped to solo! On Saturday my flight school is having a FAA Seminar about Airspace. I am in this game we are having called "Are you smarter than a Student Pilot." Were it will sorta be based on "Are you smarter than a sixth grader." I hope I do good.
Thanks till Next Time,

FMC TIME.....

http://www.flightsimx.co.uk/images/FriendlyPanelsreleasesFMCpack_AFE1/fmc.jpg
So finally after many times of frustration on FSX (Flight Simulator) when Vatsim ATC told me to do a route that I couldn't because I didn't have a FMC has been resolved. Vatsim is a network that is about as real as it can get to ATC than actually being a real pilot they are very professional and do there job as realistic as possible. But I always fly on it and they always give me like a departure route like the OBRLN1 out of KCLE. And I always got frustrated for I have never really learned to use a FMC. Well my friend that is a Real Boston APP/DEP ATC guy taught me this week and now I'm doing all this fancy stuff that I never had been able before. And now I make it alot easier for ATC. So now when I fly IFR in FSX its pretty realistic I'm so glad now. I fly for US Virtual Airways and am a CRJ - 200,700, ERJ-190 F/O. Its really fun. But anyway what I'm trying to get at is have anyone done any really tricky or down right stupid approach or departure sequences that I can try in Flight Sim?
Thanks and Until Next Time,
Ian

In the Simulator

This Tuesday I finally had a flight lesson. Its been a while since I'd had me last one about a month ago. This week we went in the new motion simulator that they just got. When I went in it, it was pretty cool except they are still working a few bugs out of it like I had to use a good amount of left yoke to just get it to go level. Ha Ha it was funny. But the reason we were in the simulator was to practice the IFR stuff and Emergency procedures I need to know for my PPL. I was basically flying in the clouds allot and always had something going wrong. Like one of my Mags were bad or my static port was clogged etc..... So overall it was pretty fun but I cant wait to get back in the air again. Its been a while. My birthday is getting closer which mean hopefully my solo day is as well.
Thanks Until Next Time,
Ian

The Airlines.

http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/uploadedImages/News/Chicago/Images/Business/Furlough.jpg
I was reading a blog Byrd in the Sky, I read frequently today and he had a new topic on furlough. I read the whole thing and yet although I knew the airline job market is a nasty one I never thought it was as cut-throat like that. I love the airlines and I cant Waite to try them out. Its just will their be room for me when I'm finally qualified? Will it be worth it?

WELL IM HOME!!!!

Sadly I'm already home got home about 10:30 last night. All I can think about is the airlines its like having a cookie you have one and you tell yourself ah I wont have another but then you just keep wanting more. For some reason I want the whole jar .... If you get what I'm talking about. Ya well the flight over to Detroit from Columbus on the way there was pretty good a quicky about 40 minutes on a CRJ200. Then from Detroit to Portland was a fun one also was a pretty brisk flight. We flew on a CRJ900 that time. Those CRJ900"s are beautiful I can only imagine the 1000's.
Yep so anyway after we got done with the flight I visited the cockpit the captain was out doing a walk around while i was looking so I didn't get to talk to him the FO was there but he wasn't to friendly. But that was the first time Ive ever seen an actual cockpit up close. So then we spent the weekend at my Uncles house in Kennebunk, Maine. Had fun spending time with my little little cousin. And my uncle is as funny as always went to his improv comedy show on Saturday. Then Sunday rolls around. we get ready to depart to the airport. Hugs and Kisses go around and were off. A little 30 minute gaunt drive to the airport and we literally are in the terminal waiting at the gate right when we enter the airport..... (its that small).
Finally the boarding starts we get on and of course i have a window seat! Like always my eyes are glued outside. We takeoff in the CRJ900 and about an hour and a half or so we are on the ground at Detroit. De board take the long walk from end to end to the next gate. Waite for the the DC-9 to get prepped. I was excited cause i think DC-9's are so freaking cool ha. So we board and there was like no one on the flight so I scootched over to the window. Windows Seat Again o so lucky ha. Then on the quick 30 minute trip from Detroit to Columbus we see if it was possible to check that cockpit out. They were so happy I asked and said that would be awesome. So Then at the end of the trip i waited to be one of the last off the plane. And got to talk to the Captain and FO. Real nice guys and gave me some great advice and encouragement on the tough road ahead of me. So that was my experience of the weekend I'm flying on United in June cant Waite....... PICTURES OF THE TRIP COMING SOON.

Thanks and Until Next Time,
Ian

Wow is that Grease on the Runway?

Today i went into the hanger thinking we were going to us the new Flight Simulator. But o was I wrong. Today luckily was a beautiful day for flying. When we were taxing to runway 18 there was a emergency jet. I didn't think it had anything on it just coming to get something or someone. So we taxied past then let him through and turned around. Real quick check before takeoff and took off. we did two patterns at the beginning my first landing was rough. Then it got better my second time. after that we proceeded to do S-turns and Steep Turns. which went well and then entered the pattern twice more. The first pattern I was on o what a great approach it was then when i was decently close to greasing the land my instructor said Go-Around. He did this as practice for me to know what to do we talked about it earlier that lesson. So we did one more pattern and I did a pretty good landing and called it a day.
Thanks and Until Next Time,
Ian

The Big 1-0 !!!!!

Today I did a flight lesson. Like all times they are fun we practiced crosswind takeoffs and landings. And also Turns about a Point. I'm getting the hang off turns around the point and slips and all that stuff. Its funny cause I'm not used to there being more than one plane flying at the airport at the same time as we are. So that was a cool and interesting experience all in its self. Um as you see in the title I have hit the 10 hour mark in my flying journey now only a whole lot more to go. Also I did my first fully in control landing by myself i ballooned a bit and it was a touch hard but I guess you can ask for perfect on your first real landing. Heads up next lesson will be in a Full motion simulator so ill try to get a picture of that. I'm pretty excited for it cause you can learn a lot from a simulator. Below are some pictures my mom took while we were taxiing back to the hanger. the cockpit one I took.
Until Next Time, Pilot Ian
